VENICE, ITALY – the Golden City. The mysterious home to centuries of closely-guarded secrets in artisanal glass and mosaic manufacture.

In my VIDEO below, tour this glorious city, from the glistening Orsoni smalti foundry, through Murano’s narrow alleys to glowing terra cotta rooftops. A city of dichotomies where old and new clash, it is still an artist’s mecca.

Cosmatesque pavement at Piazza San Marco

I made these photos in October 2011 when my fellow mosaicists and I went off-the-beaten-path with Julie Richey’s Mosaic Masterpiece, Dolce Vita Tour of Rome, Ravenna, and Venice.  I was part of the three-day Venetian extension.

Julie’s 2012 tour plans are underway

This year, the itinerary is again scheduled for October, and includes the art treasures Rome and Florence.  An American art historian living in Florence will provide insider-access to all the special places you can’t see on the average tour.  There will be a cooking class and wine tasting jewel-like museums and plenty of Dolce Vita moments.

A few creative tour participants a have highlighted the adventures:

Allan Punton created a WEBSITE with highlights of the last tour

Nancie Mills Pipgras posted several detailed and exciting blogs about the tour, which can be found on the new MosaicArt Now website:
PART ONE: ROME, HERE
AND PART TWO: ROME AND TAROT GARDEN : HERE
